Is laminate flooring waterproof?

There is a waterproof version of laminate, one that’s relatively new to the market and just what everyone has been waiting for!  It makes those affordable and very realistic wood look floors even more desirable; people can now confidently install waterproof laminate floors in kitchens, knowing it can stand up to those “oops!” moments.

Be mindful, however, that it does have two versions, one of which is the original water-resistant material. Be sure to specify if you want the waterproof or original one when you come into our laminate flooring store.

Isn't water-resistant the same as waterproof?

No.  Many use these terms interchangeably, but that is not correct.  Water-resistant might have one waterproof element, and water resistance can be enhanced during installation. Overall, the material can still absorb and swell, resulting in staining,  peeling, and rippling. Waterproof means the product is always totally impervious to liquid.

Keep in mind, however, that this is watertight from top to bottom.  This means you can spill on it, and water won’t be able to seep through interlocking systems, no matter how long it lies there. If, however, you have moisture issues with the subfloor, you will still need to install a vapor barrier underlayment. You don’t need to worry about that dropped gallon of milk or overturned cup of coffee or glass of juice with waterproof laminate.

Waterproof features: the game-changer

The construction features waterproof seals that keep moisture away from the core. Joints fit together tightly to keep water out, and sometimes there are angles, making the joints wrap over plank edges for even more protection. The core is HDF (high-density fiberboard), which contains some resins that keep it from swelling. HDF is considered one of the most stable laminate cores.
