Fiber is really the most basic part of the carpet, so here’s a small guide. Now, don’t make the mistake of thinking one fiber might automatically be better than another, because it will really also come down to your lifestyle, such as whether or not you have kids and pets or heavy foot traffic.
Also, be mindful that some fibers will perform differently depending upon carpet style.
Now let’s get started!
There are four basic carpet fibers:
● Nylon. It’s soft, ultra-durable and stain-resistant. It’s also resistant to abrasion; for a long time, nylon enjoyed the #1 place as the toughest material! Because of nylon’s exceptional durability, it’s a great choice if you have a busy household with a lot of foot traffic. It’s also a good choice for commercial applications.
● Polyester. It’s not quite as tough as nylon, but if it’s constructed well, you’ll see some great performance. It works well with a higher carpet density; that refers to how closely the fibers are sewn into the backing. High piles are good, too! Polyester does have very good stain-resistance, easy cleanability and excellent fade-resistance. It’s also non-allergenic. A favorite among environmentalists, the polyester fiber is often recycled from plastic bottles, making it eco-friendly.
It does have one disadvantage: It can flatten when exposed to too much weight, so it’s not the best choice for high-traffic areas.
● Olefin. This is the least expensive, but can also be the least durable. Olefin is one of those fibers that performs differently depending upon style, so choose one that’ll be long-lasting. For instance, Olefin works well in Berbers.
● Wool. Wool is natural, and it might be the preferred choice of those seeking a “green” product. It’s also very soft, so no synthetic material can ever match that. But it’s also expensive and very porous. The porosity means it soaks up water and, therefore, shouldn’t be installed in basements or other high-moisture areas.
